Yes, counting calories is an annoyance. We get it. But, once this becomes routine, like anything else, you miss it if not continued. That being said....how do you get started with this practice? And why is it important?

First and foremost, knowing what you put into your body is enormously important. Often times, we just eat to eat, without ever really thinking about what we are consuming. Many of us go to the gym, day after day and somehow believe this will "make up" for the calories we have consumed mindlessly....not true. Then there are those people that rely on too few calories and hope that their body can exist on them without somehow feeling exhausted and working harder....again...untrue. Our bodies need certain types of foods, vitamins and minerals and yes, calories to run efficiently. While most of the world may be "on a diet" it is important to remember that a "diet" should be a way of life, not a New Year's resolution.

How can you become a master calorie counter? Well, I would never say anyone is a master at this...but you can become a smarter consumer and learn more about your body and how it reacts to certain foods. My Mom used to say..."A moment on the lips, forever on the hips"...I laughed, but for me, this is true. Well, true for greasy food. So what do I do? I try as hard as I can as much as possible to cut out greasy, fried delicious, yummy :) food. And I have! I limit those french fries and brown gravy to once a month or less even. I have stopped making Sunday pasta every week and now its every other...there are ways to become more cognizant...especially when you know how your body behaves.

Sites like ours, Healthper.com use biometric information to gauge how many calories your body needs to maintain a healthy weight or to lose those additional pounds. As a guide, you can enter the foods you have eaten, and a general list will show you the potential calories (give or take as with all counters) that were consumed. Keep this diary for an extended period of time to track your intake and I guarantee you will learn about your body and its needs. Moreover, you will learn just how much you actually need to feel full and reach your goals!
I remember being a teenager and I remember that yes, weight was always an issue but more today than ever with social media as an intermediary and distribution channel. Kids of today are sending one another pictures in all forms. They post them on Facebook, Instagram, text messages etc., and they all "discuss" how one another "looks"...whether negative or positive....unfortunately, the negative seems to outweigh the positive.

WEIGHT is almost a dirty word. And being OVERweight is considered a crime when you are a teenager. So how do you, as a parent talk to your kids about how to improve their habits? Not to look better for their peers, but to be HEALTHY and to reach adulthood with a positive outlook about themselves?

This is a very tricky question and one that has varied answers. I am not an expert, but I have an opinion. As a woman, who (now looking back) was not "overweight" but thought I was and struggled with feeling bigger than other girls. I however, was an active teen. I played softball, soccer and I went to summer camp in the Berkshires and did activities all day, every day even into my adult years as a teen and adult. This is a common problem with many females. We see ourselves very different than what is real. My situation may be different, because I had a healthy outlook...I chose (with the help of my Mom) to keep playing sports and to avoid any unhealthy behavior that could become dangerous to my health. Of course, this was in the early 90's and social media did not exist...so the pressure was not as immediate.

It is estimated, that today over 50% of teenagers (including boys) are participating in unhealthy behavior to decrease their body weight through various forms of elimination, starvation, smoking, drugs, diet pills, drinks etc. Trust me, I am aware that these methods have been used for years but it seems that the age of the user is getting younger and younger. A study by the University of Pittsburgh shows that children as young as 7 years of age have shown signs of dieting.

Your children are never too young to learn about healthy behavior. They are never too young to get involved in team sports (appropriately aged). Teaching your kids how to make healthy decisions about food and drinks at an early age can help prevent a whole host of diseases including diabetes, heart disease, breathing problems and weight issues. Kids uses their smart phones for any number of things...introduce them to managing their health online through programs like Healthper. It's never too early to get them on board.Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-20405842382539305472013-06-21T00:15:00.002-04:002013-06-21T00:16:48.726-04:00In the wake of the AMA changing obesity to a "disease" its time to start examining whether or not the connection between the diabetes epidemic and excess weight is the downfall of our healthy society.

How can we combat this trend that is spiraling out of control? In a recent article posted by several New York city papers, the diabetes epidemic has hit a new high here in NYC. We have seen over a 10% increase in the presence of diabetes related deaths since 1990, since is a double digit increase. Based on the population, that accounts for 1 death every 90 minutes, or 16 deaths a day attributed to diabetes. There are some interesting statistics that breakdown the numbers by race, by in my opinion that is unimportant at the moment. What IS important is that we have to change the mindset of the average American. This includes children, not just adults. If you are old enough to know you want that bag of potato chips, you are old enough to know how that fatty treat can affect your body mass.

Here in NY, a campaign will be launched (via radio) that will encourage New Yorkers to exercise more, eat less fast foods and less sugary drinks. How successful will this be? This still remains to be seen. A leading expert points to rising obesity and suggests that if these numbers continue to increase, so will the number of people with diabetes.

What can you do decrease your chances? Let's start with the basics. Cut out the sugar and excess carbs. Increase your water intake. Walk more. Stop sitting still on the couch. Eat less fried food. Or stop eating fried foods altogether. Start tracking your activity. Learn what behaviors are helping to change your outcomes. Healthper.com can help you do this. Learn more today.Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-65530210134282685912013-06-19T17:05:00.000-04:002013-06-21T00:17:56.888-04:00On Tuesday June 18th, 2013 the AMA determined that "obesity" is now considered a disease in the United States. I have to wonder what this will mean for the future of health care in this country and the future of wellness?

First as foremost, I want to believe that this change has been made to help create behavior change and support the goals of companies like Healthper. I want to believe that giving people greater access to health and wellness programs (with recommendations) from doctors and programs that will be supported by their insurance companies is a positive, however I am concerned that labeling obesity a disease, will allow those that are "afflicted" with an excuse to continue their poor behavior.

How do you change the average American's mindset? What can we do to increase their want vs. need to get healthy? Encouragement? Incentives? Social Engagement? Accountability? Here at Healthper, we believe that creating an environment that incorporates all of these strategies, plus a sense of self accomplishment can begin to create that lasting change.

The lasting effects of this new label still remain to be seen. We are not 24 hours out since this decision took place. My hope is that this "disease" that has become an epidemic across the US for not only adults but children, will be taken more seriously now that it is seen as life threatening disease.Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-56067556794543880992012-04-18T16:35:00.001-04:002012-04-18T16:39:00.538-04:00Healthper’s Innovation Paves the Way for Total Wellness
Healthper’s Innovation Paves the Way for Total Wellness

Healthper, Inc., a fast rising social game-based health engagement platform is changing how people manage total health and wellness. Change comes in many different forms. In this case, it’s about getting healthy and staying that way. Healthper has artfully created a platform that incorporates the social networking aspect that has become second nature to most and an intriguing gaming environment that offers tracking of multiple health factors with the ease of a card game. Included in the new “Healthdeck” were the Calorie Counter and the card that could change everything, the free smoking cessation program, the Quit Smoking card. This engagement is destined to be a clear winner in the Healthper deck. Jaime Fiorello, Director of Merchant and Strategic Partnerships at Healthper is alarmed by the most recent trends. “The overall statistics are shocking. There are over 1.1 billion smokers worldwide. 15 billion cigarettes a day are being purchased across the world. Even more offensive is the popularity smoking has gained among children ages 13 to 15 years old. Over 3,000 kids a day will pick up the habit. With all the information available, smoking continues to build a following.” Healthper is determined to make strides against this ever-present fad. What was once considered “cool” in the 1950’s, is no longer acceptable today. “There happens to be enough nicotine in 5 cigarettes to kill an average adult if ingested whole. If we can curb the appeal, we have done our job. ” says Fiorello.

For those watching their weight, the Calorie Counter is an outstanding tool to gauge daily food intake. Healthper allows members to set their target goal and input data to see if they are meeting the daily requirements necessary to sustain a healthy body weight. Additionally, it acts as a food journal so members can be cognizant of what beneficial foods or empty calories they are consuming. Although the average person may eat more than the allotted amount, often times we can starve our body if we do not eat enough or the right types of foods. The Calorie Counter helps members determine where they fit and how to create a complete diet.

About Healthper
Come see what the buzz is about. http://www.Healthper.comHealthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-88863490304570208782012-02-03T12:36:00.000-05:002012-02-03T12:36:36.016-05:00The Aha! MomentWhat's healthier, a hot dog with all the fixings and a side of cheese fries or a self prepared grilled chicken sandwich on a whole wheat bun with ketchup, lettuce and tomato? I think we can figure this one out without any help from a nutritionist. But, what would it take to make you CHOOSE the grilled chicken? How about a video of how a hot dog is made? Or maybe a side-by-side of the nutritional values associated with each meal? Either way, the choice is yours.

I can remember my Aha! moment. I wasn't much of a salad eater. If it was green, I figured it had a fungus. Try something new? Never! I thought people who drank water throughout the day were "boring". I saw them as tree huggers. Then I met someone who showed me how to incorporate some of the foods I already liked into my diet, and avoid getting bored. Additionally, he showed me that those same foods have complimentary foods that look and taste similar and could stand a second look. He made it a point to allow me to go slow with these new foods. Be conscience about the choices I was making and I would start to see changes in my energy, mood and overall lifestyle. After a while, I felt in control. I felt like I was making decisions based on what my body was craving, and my body was craving healthy items. Drinking down a glass of water helped me to feel rejuvenated!

I guess the point is...reaching our Aha! moment can happen at any time. Meeting someone that has the knowledge to guide you, feeling unhealthy and wanting a change, a Doctor's advice or just knowing it's time to make better choices, for you. Whatever gets you there, stick with it. Take it slow if need be, and remember that making positive healthy choices will benefit you and those around you.Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-21517824278416064672012-01-17T13:15:00.000-05:002012-01-17T13:15:27.670-05:00Which Program is Right for Me?The Atkins Diet, The Grapefruit Diet, The Cookie Diet, Low Carb, High Impact, Low Impact...how do we choose? With so many diets and exercise routines "proven" to work by one renowned fitness professional after the next, it can all get very confusing. How do you choose "your" perfect healthy living plan?

The answer could be a tricky one at best. I read article after article by some of the most interesting and "in-shape" wellness gurus in the world today. I know its not easy to determine who's right and who is just spouting the fad of the week. What makes this diet or workout plan better than the other? Ultimately, it's about your body and the way it responds. Trial and error. Our bodies need nutritious food and lots of water to remain healthy, but what they do not need is trans fat and other man made chemicals. Common sense would dictate that eating a diet high in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, water and getting at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week of exercise will keep you fit. However, some of us need more rigorous exercise to tone and shape our bodies. Additionally, its never that easy to refrain from the "fun" foods like pizza, french fries and chips.

So let's start being realistic about getting in shape and how exactly that might happen for each of us. First and foremost, talk to your Doctor. How much weight do you need to lose? Get some perspective on a real number. Discuss how you can be healthy and stay on the right track. We can all benefit from the knowledge our medical professionals possess. Discuss your options together. Are you willing to dedicate time to your body and mind? And finally, what does he or she suggest for you? Should you talk to a fitness professional about your goal weight and how to achieve that number? And never, ever take any dangerous supplements to speed up the process.

Determining what program is right for you can be a frustrating process. You can help by learning about your own body and how it responds to diet and exercise. There is no cure all, but hard work, dedication and figuring out what works for you, can push you to your goal.Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-81148296420756092082012-01-12T20:08:00.000-05:002012-01-12T20:08:45.058-05:00Healthper's January News-Motivation and Rejuvenation
Dear Healthper Members and Friends:

However, there are various ways to stop this cycle of non-commitment and start learning how to make a plan and follow through with it.

Most of us, if not all of us, practice this in our daily life with our work. We come to work, we are assigned tasks, and we complete those tasks. If we don't, this could mean that we fall behind and ultimately could end up losing our source of income. You learn how to manage your daily responsibilities because you WANT to be successful. We want to receive accolades for the work we produce. Its almost a "need" to receive praise from our supervisor. The same can be attributed to the achievements in our personal life.

Clearly, at times we put too much on our plates and end up losing sight. A plan should be something that is measurable and attainable, for YOU. Look at the variables in your life. Allow yourself to ease into the new plan, but remember that you have set your sights on an outcome. There is nothing more exhilarating than making it to the end of your "to-do" list. In this case, your "to-do" list is about you and how to become more involved in your health and well being. Additionally the well being of your family.

Here's an idea for today - Set up a goal at Healthper.com. Give yourself no more than 14 days to complete this goal. Make it something easy to start. For example, try removing any sugar cereals from your kids (and your) diet and replace it with whole grain cereal with and/or low fat yogurt and fresh fruit. Measure how your family feels in 2 weeks and Log it at www.healthper.com. We look forward to hearing from you!Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-48758125379449806982012-01-03T15:36:00.000-05:002012-01-03T15:36:31.669-05:00Stop Sabotaging Me!Sometimes the one or (ones) we love are our biggest enemies in the fight against fat! My Mother used to tell me that whenever she went on a diet, my Father would inevitably bring home her favorite type of chocolate dessert in an effort to derail her fitness plans. Why you ask? Because basic human behavior comes into play when our mate is about to start "looking better". Now some of you may not agree with this assessment, but let's really think about it for a minute. Be honest. If you haven't exhibited this type of behavior before, you have wanted to. It's our need to keep things status quo. But why not help our loved ones in their search for enriched living? Can't we motivate one another to feel beautiful without feeling like we are getting left behind? Why not join in on the healthy fun?

Start by evaluating what particular health factors you would like to change, and get on board! Join your loved one in the process. Understand their needs and why they want to reach a certain goal or goals. Don't sabotage their hard work by adding a negative to the mix. Motivate. Encourage. Join. Positive results can be obtained when we feel that we are being supported by those around us that love and care for us. Don't order that pizza and eat it in front of them. Offer an alternative, like cooking a healthy whole wheat pasta dinner together and making a fresh salad. Forget the fried chicken and look for fun ways to "oven fry" your chicken and save hundreds of calories. Your arteries will thank you!

Don't forget we all need support to get through "change". It's never an easy road. The more intentional roadblocks we encounter, the harder it is to see the light at the end of the path.Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-87607897226380163472012-01-02T17:49:00.001-05:002012-01-03T15:13:10.226-05:00A New Year Means a New You?It's the time again, when we all set out to make resolutions about losing weight, drinking less soda, alcohol, coffee, spending more time with family and friends, working less, saving more and so on and so on and so on....it never seems to end. But what if this year, we actually stuck to those goals? What if you really chose to make changes that were within your reach and could spark a new, improved and balanced you?

I, for one know that I could use a little tune up in a few departments. I have been carrying around an extra 25 lbs for some time and made every excuse NOT to clean up my act. My Mother has been sick for 2 years, I work too much, it's cold outside, it's hot outside, I'm too tired...and that's clearly what they are....excuses! No amount of complaining will release my body of the extra 25 pounds of Doritos and pizza I shoved into it over the past 24 months. What will you ask? Exercise, disciple, water, tracking, motivation, moderation, and a clear GOAL!

Setting a goal and engaging daily in the outcome of that goal will help you, and I to make it to the finish line. Is it a difficult road? YES! But with help, we can all get there. Learning how to become a responsible partner in your health is what WILL make you successful. Measure your progress by not only what you have learned, but by how you have changed your behavior. Do not set yourself up for failure by creating unrealistic expectations that can never be met. Rely on your social network at Healthper.com to give you tips, tricks and advice. Let's make goals in 2012 we can stick to!Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-25159458892495807472011-12-28T22:50:00.000-05:002011-12-28T22:50:57.345-05:00Helping Fellow MembersWhat can you bring to a new relationship? In this case, you are helping your fellow Healthper members to eat right, exercise, lose weight and manage their lifestyle. All in the name of getting healthy and creating a place where each person can come to socialize with other like-minded individuals. What's better than showing off that new, slimmer body? How about telling the world how you achieved those results? Why not help others to create those same stories of success?

It's amazing how hearing a positive story can change your level of enthusiasm. It can bring you to a point that you never believed possible. "What if I could achieve change?" Imagine looking on the mirror and complimenting and face and body you see looking back at you. These results are attainable! They are waiting for you, and perhaps all it takes is a boost of moral. A simple exchange of methods between members.

Share your experiences and what works...you may just create more success stories than your own.Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-15532639560553365782011-12-23T14:57:00.000-05:002011-12-23T14:57:35.978-05:00Surprising Fact...Let's Change TogetherStop and think about the last time you made a personal change because you really wanted to. Does anything come to mind? Changing behavior is one of the hardest tasks to accomplish, but it can be done! Ultimately its about reinforcement and engagement. How can we start making changes in our lives that create balance and allow us to maximize our choices?

Surprisingly, 67% of American adults are overweight and over 60% do not incorporate exercise into their life. Even more shocking, is that over 20% are still smoking. Every day fast food restaurants are "creating" "healthier" menu options to lure customers in, but their calorie and fat laden meals are the anchors for which their patrons are visiting. Perhaps once in a while the customer may choose a salad or baked potato, but generally, they are there for the 65 grams of hamburger fat with a side of fries. It's fast and easy and convenient....but so is keeping fresh vegetables, salad and a fully cooked chicken breast in your refrigerator.

We have got to make a change! Diabetes and heart disease are real and they are preventable. Taking action to increase your activity and move the needle must become an important part of your goals in 2012. What makes us want to change? Start small...5 days...10 days...20...soon, it's 30 days and you are 5 pounds thinner and your energy level is through the roof and you have haven't visited your ex-favorite fast food joint.

Log your progress at www.healthper.com. Invite your friends and friends on your journey! Help them to create their own story of change. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays...Until next time :)Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-31002000769636207652011-12-21T14:15:00.000-05:002011-12-21T14:15:04.981-05:00Write it DownDo you remember what you ate this morning? How about last night for dinner? Often times, our busy lives force us to eat whats available, rather than what is "good for us". Unfortunately, much of the time, we don't realize that we've had only a few handfuls of cheerios and a sip of coffee at 9 am and it's already 4PM. This type of cycle, does not do a body good! Our bodies and minds need fuel to survive and to thrive. The energy that gets us through the day comes from the food we consume. Try making that food as healthy as possible, at least 5 days a week. You're allowed to have those few cheat days, but everything in moderation.

A great way to keep track of your intake, is to keep a food diary. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book for weight loss and management. This tool can give you keen insight into your calories and fat as well as the timing of your meals and snacks. It can also help you pinpoint where you might be going wrong (or right) in your efforts to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Healthper.com has a built in tool to help you keep track of your food consumption. And, in addition to learning how to manage your intake, you can earn points, take challenges, invite friends and motivate others. It's almost the new year and time for a few new changes...let's make health a priority!Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-21744106149227350422011-12-15T14:27:00.000-05:002011-12-15T14:27:36.288-05:00How do your kids start the day? Get rid of the sugar....I don't have kids, but I was a kid once (a long time ago) as I just hit the 35 mark recently, and what I know is that in my days our shelves weren't packed with sugary cereals and pop tarts. If we didn't have time to eat, my Mother (who is a nurse, so I presume this was OK) would throw eggs, milk and chocolate syrup into the blender and we drank her version of "egg nog" before we were allowed to go to school. We loved it! It's a favorite past time of my sister, brother and I. Otherwise, we had the option of Cheerios, Corn Flakes, Total (when it was only bran flavored), bagels, English muffins and Eggs.

Every day (and night now) we are bombarded with commercials that have smiling parents handing their kids chocolate sugar cereal in a bowl or a piece of frosted cardboard from the toaster acting like they just did their job! Really? These are easy ways to send your kid off without trying very hard. You are allowed to say no! Start them early eating bananas, apples, pears, low sodium oatmeal, cheerios, whole grain breads and yogurt. Whip up a batch of fresh pancakes or french toast, wrap them up and store them in the fridge rather than buying the prepackaged kind with tons of preservatives. Getting closer to nature is better! It's healthier and they will keep these habits ingrained in their behavior as they grow.Healthperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16909214695160871663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2261520544472008506.post-67860322213967736102011-12-13T13:00:00.000-05:002011-12-13T13:00:55.056-05:00That Small ChangeWhat does it take to make a small change? Willpower? Need? Time? Perhaps all of those elements come into play when talking about changing how we think, act and most importantly eat! Why is it so difficult for us as humans to change our behavior? We tell ourselves, "just one more potato chip and I'm done", but inevitably we have 10 more. Why can't we control our wants? Of course there are people who can put that bag down when they feel satisfied, but let's be honest....they are rare.

So how can we start making those changes and still feel satisfied? Start small. Allow yourself to ease into your new way of thinking. Trick your mind into believing you've had exactly the right amount you desire of that snack. No one is saying that you have to become a devout rice cake follower, but if you must eat something salty, try a healthier version of that snack and ensure it's a smaller portion than your usual half a box. Eventually, you will negotiate with yourself and the everyday snack will become every other day and then maybe, just maybe it's only a cheat day. Welcome to the new (and only) Healthper blog :) This blog will be a place for you to leave your comments, suggestions for Healthper and just to talk about the world of social health. Our goal at Healthper is to bring social networking to the ever changing world of health. We want you, our members to network with one another, guide peers with their goals, gain insight into how other people lose weight and/or maintain their healthy outlook on life. We know its not easy to make changes to your daily life, especially when those changes mean "giving up" something you love to eat or adding a bit of exercise to your routine. What we do know is that it will set an example for your family and friends and help you to lead a more productive life.
